We say, absolutely, because clean beauty is safer for you and the planet.
Why? Because the beauty industry is one of the least regulated industries.
It is completely open for beauty companies to incorporate known harmful ingredients or use ingredients that haven’t even been evaluated for safety. The images portrayed on the front of a product bottle, do not need to reflect the ingredients on the list. So a product that claims ‘contains natural or organic ingredients’ may also contain unsafe, toxic ingredients. What you put on your skin needs to be as safe as what you put inside your body. It’s no longer acceptable to us that companies endorse and manufacture products that may contain chemicals that disrupt hormones, cause skin irritation or possibly interfere with our nervous system.
It takes a lot of time and effort to read the ingredients labels, checking with reputable sources such as Environmental Working Group Skindeep Database (EWG) and Safe Cosmetics. We fully endorse you skilling yourself up on these sites, how to use them and understanding how to read the INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient - are systematic names internationally recognized to identify cosmetic ingredients) – but if you don’t have time to get through all this…. Then we have done this work for you, so you don’t have to. All you have to do is shop with the confidence that we have done this for you.
How do you make the transition to clean beauty?
Slowly! Is our advice, just one product at a time. Our natural beauty products are very effective, if not more so than their mainstream counterparts, but you want to make sure you are investing in the right products for your skin, hair and body.
Make a start with one product at a time and choose from the products that you use most often. We suggest waiting until you run out of your mainstream product then swap it out for the natural, safe-for-you alternative. Throwing everything away at once will be costly and also too much change all at once could create problems for your skin and hair.
Top 5 categories to swap for clean
This is often the first product that people switch to. As we use deodorant everyday and this product goes directly under our arms, near our precious chest and lymph nodes, swapping to a natural deodorant is a much safer option. But not all natural deodorants are created equal, that’s why we only stock brands that actually work!
We use cleaners to remove daily grime and makeup from our face, working the cleanser over our face, eyes and mouth – so why cleanse with bad ingredients? As a product that is used twice a day, opt for a beautifully luxurious natural cleanser made from nourishing, clean ingredients that is safe and won’t strip your natural skin oils.
Lipstick has been found to contain levels of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury and manganese. Lipstick, lip balms, lip treatments all get eaten off (they don’t just evaporate). So ensure that only safe ingredients get past your lips and reduce the toxic load on your body.
Mascara is the second most used beauty product and one we often don’t even think may contain toxic ingredients. Ingredients in mascara can make their way into our bloodstream through the tiny pores around our eyes, (this may occur when we apply the mascara, rub our eyes or when our eyes water), so rather than using a mainstream brand containing parabens, phthalates and other nasties, opt for a natural mascara. We’ll have your eyelashes looking amazing with our range of everyday, volumizing and waterproof mascaras.
Daily sunscreen protection either on it’s own or under makeup is a must in our Australasian climate to protect against premature ageing, skin cancer and hyperpigmentation from harmful UV rays. Mainstream sunscreens, while boosting being ‘paraben-free’ still contain other ingredients that may mimic hormones, cause skin reactions and are toxic to marine and coral life. Switch to one of our mineral natural sunscreens for your sun protection, formulas that are safe for you and for our precious marine life.
