Yasmin founder of Biddy + May Clean Beauty Store gives us her best tips to overhaul your makeup bag and create your minimalist clean beauty capsule.
Rummaging around in a messy makeup bag trying to find your battered eye pencil and your ‘on its last legs’ lipstick is no fun and can be totally frustrating. Treat yourself by organising, streamlining and uplifting your makeup bag.
Here’s how in 3 easy steps.
Step 1: Give your makeup bag a good clean!
Tip out the contents first (onto an old towel or cloth so you don’t mark any surfaces) throw out any old and unworn products (especially eye makeup products), as these can be breeding grounds for bacteria. This purge will also help you evaluate what you are wearing regularly. Clean makeup brushes and sponges (this should be done regularly) to prevent eye infections and acne. Ditch what you are not using. Toss what’s expired. If your makeup consists of mainstream brands, you might want to consider safer, more natural alternatives.
Step 2: Streamline your makeup bag by using multi-functional products.
When replacing your makeup products we advise ditching the products that contain toxic ingredients and opt for natural makeup products that have been made with premium clean ingredients. That way you know that what you are putting on your body is as important as the good nutrition you put into your body. Swap your lipstick and blusher for a lip & cheek colour (often these can also be used on your eyes). In summer, swap your heavy foundation for a tinted foundation that contains an SPF to protect your skin from sun damage. Swap your conventional mascara that may contain toxic chemicals (these have no place being close to your eyes) with a clean makeup, natural mascara alternative. And finally, add a good natural highlighter or bronzer for a bit of glow, choose one that can be used on lips, cheeks and eyes.
Step 3: Shop for quality and not price.
Buying a premium quality, natural makeup product with rave reviews and a higher price point will stand you in good stead, rather than a lower priced ‘quick grab’ product from the supermarket or pharmacy. Good quality will last longer, and if it’s only made with safe ingredients, then you aren’t paying for unnecessary ingredients, such as preservatives.
